A somewhat gay, but not entirely, bar. it is a good place since you can be comfortable there, male or female, gay or straight, as long as you are comfortable with the whole range of sexual orientation and action. If you are offended by effeminate men, or gays in general, or straight guys, or lesbians or straight women, or 50 year olds, don't bother, Otherwise you can have a good time, the later it gets the younger and the drunker the patrons become and the wilder it gets.

Just as in most parts of life, a smile and a friendly "Hi" to the staff and other patrons, without grabbing an ass until the signal is clear, gets you alot further than an attitude, be it shy, superior. or uninvited physical attention.

Be prepared to wait for a drink if the staff decides you aren't cool enough. I started going to the 5 Star a few months ago to dance. I'm a shy person who tends to go alone, but I love to dance. The music is good when I'm there on Fridays, and the other customers are always very friendly. My main problem in the 5 Star is actually getting a drink, I can't seem to get service.

It's as if the bartenders go out of their way to let me know I am unwelcome. In particular, there is one female bartender, a young pretty girl who seems to hate my guts. After this last Friday's hostile and humiliating encounter with her I certainly won't be going back. Maybe I'd have more luck if I were a young gay man instead of an middle aged woman.

Great gay bar downtown. The 5 Star Saloon came under new ownership last year and the kids who run it have completely turned it around. New bar, tabletop games and renovated facilities have changed the look, and the clientele is a great mix of the hip Reno and visitors from around the world! They sponsor events all the time, and the place gets packed on the weekends with crowds that stick around well after the sun comes up. For anyone who hasn't been down in the last year it is definitely worth your while to poke your head in and see the changes! My favorite is Thursday night, when the DJ gets loco with a wild mix of tunes and doesn't leave until we get tired!
