Doctor saved my daughter's arm

Dr. Porras - of Reno Orthopedics - is a very competent, friendly and approachable doctor. He was called to the hospital on December 30th to look at my daughter who had an on-going abcess/infection in her shoulder for 6 weeks. An ultrasound and x-ray had been done the night before in the ER, and he immediately scheduled her for sugery.

After the surgery was conclulded, he advised me that the infection had been caused by a suture left in by a previous orthopedic surgeon in January, and likely had been festering for several months before coming to a visible head. There is also a hole the size of a dime in her bone, and an infection now in the bone, which will require long-term IV antibiotics post-surgery.

The irony is that on December 26th another orthopedic surgeon had been called in by an ER doctor to look at the shoulder, and did not even order any diagnositcs, just manipulated her already extremely sore shoulder and stated that there was no need for surgery.

I am very grateful, not only to Dr. Porras, but to the ER doctor on December 29th who ordered the ultrasound and x-ray that showed the deep abcess and admitted her to the hospital.

• Pros: Since we have only dealt with this doctor at the hospital at this time, do not have any comment regarding the office environment.
